How to Prepare for Your First Childcare Placement
Starting your first placement can be nerve-wracking. Here's everything you need to know to walk in confident on day one.

Starting your first childcare placement is an exciting milestone — and preparation is everything.
Before your first day, review the age group you'll be working with. Whether it's infants, toddlers, or preschoolers, each group has distinct developmental needs. Brush up on the basics: developmentally appropriate activities, safe sleep practices for infants, and age-appropriate language.
Arrive 10 minutes early. This gives you time to meet the lead teacher, understand the daily schedule, and locate key areas like the changing station, snack area, and emergency exits.
Dress comfortably and practically. You'll be on the floor, outside, and moving constantly. Closed-toe shoes are a must.
Most importantly, follow the lead teacher's cues. Every center has its own culture, routines, and expectations. The best thing you can do on day one is observe, assist, and ask thoughtful questions.
After your shift, take a few minutes to reflect: What went well? What would you do differently? Building this habit early in your career will make you a better educator over time.
